Eddie Mulder’s West Coast Dirt Track Series

Willow Springs – Walt James Stadium

Rosamond, CA | Sunday, October 1

Day two at Willow Springs. Sunday, October 1st morning began with the riders and families gathered again with even more excitement because there was even more prize money to be won!  And, it was the official Joey Brown Memorial.  Joey Brown 19z has been an icon in California motorcycle racing for years.   Joey hailed from Paso Robles, California where he owned and operated Brown’s Cycles, catering to the needs of racers for many years and was a pretty successful racer himself.  He raised four boys, Ronnie Brown, David Brown, Daniel Brown and Little Ron.  Joe and his sons have all thrown their legs over iron horses since they were youngsters and have won may championships and awards through the years so it was an honor to pay homage to his legacy after his passing in October of 2016.  In attendance to pay respects to Joey Brown were event sponsors, Mark and Randy Zimmerman, Rod Lake, Terry Otton and Sid Payne Jr.The Payne’s generously donated a water truck for the weekend.  Also on hand were Mike Haney a TT winner at the Astrodome, Bill Bartell of Bartell’s Harley Davidson, Chuck Palmgren, Sammy Tanner, Digger Helm, Jerry Carr, Ron Wood, Steve De Lorenzi , promoter of both Sacramento and Calistoga in 2017, actor Barry Weiss and so many more.

The rider’s meeting started the day followed by 2 reverse laps for all that cared to join, led by the Brown Brothers and Eddie in honor of Joey Brown and all the other riders that have recently passed on.  It was a moving tribute and just the first of the day. Practice got started and was followed by heat races, the Rod Lake Racing and Terry Otton Racing dash for cash, semis and main events. Racing also included a memorial race for the Brown boys to race against each other in honor of their dad.  Gathered on the infield were the families, fans and other riders to offer a salute at the finish line to the winner and at the same time to show their respect for Joey.  Being the close family they are, the brothers gathered coming out of turn 4 and crossed the finish line together.  Not a dry eye in the house.

Highlights of the day included Danny Ritchie aboard Herbie Wolf’s EM Ltd. Triumph riding the Modern 750 class to a strong victory in front of Tom Horton and Danny’s brother the Willow Springs master at track preparation, Gary Ritchie. Rick Reed and Steve Craft battled in the Sr. Novice/Super Senior class of 14.  Gary Ritchie rounded out this podium too.  Mark LaDue, seated on a 1942 Harley Davidson Knucklehead 1200, showed the mixed Dinosaur/Classic 250 class the fastest way around the track leading the field from flag to flag.

Jim Ottele, piloting a 1937 Indian 750 finished 2nd followed by Roland Sands riding a 1941 Indian 750 both of whom had mechanical difficulties Saturday.  David Brown, proudly riding his dad’s 19z Honda 360 beat John Lundgren and Jeff Lesley in the Modern 250/500 class.  These three rode 1, 2, 3, start to finish.  Jeff Gonzales, a regular at the Willow Springs races for many years was happy to see his old friend and competitor from the Chowchilla Barnburner, Jason Craven, at Willow but maybe not so happy to finish 4th behind Jack Jones, Craven and Lundgren in the 500 Support class.  Young Dominic De Mario took the 80cc class home and it was Kage Tadman to the checkers first in the 50cc class.  Saturday Grant Holmes beat Travis Petton IV in the Open Amateur A class. Sunday Petton twisted the throttle just a bit more and won the class.  Bronson Pearce finished 3rd.  Hunter Brooks another fast youngster from California won the Open Amateur B main.

Always competitive when the stakes are even higher, Mees took both the dash for cash and the Specialty Fabrications, Inc. main event.  Sammy Halbert, always strong at Willow, held the lead for 9 laps.  In lap 10 Mees took the lead and never looked back winning the race.  The biggest move of the race was from Jeffrey Carver.  After having to qualify for the 16 rider main event, placing in the top two of  his semi he started in the third row. Reeling in riders every lap, Carver raced his way all the way up to a second place finish!   At the checkers it was Mees, Carver and Halbert in that order.  Of the 28 registered entries in Sunday’s Pro Class, were noteable riders from England, Oliver Brindley who has ridden the last half of the AFT Series, Maikel Dijkstra from the Netherlands and Suzuki rider Toni Elias the inaugural champion of the Moto2 World Championship and the 2017 MotoAmerica Super bike Champion.

Gary Ritchie outdid himself once again in track prep, the flaggers, score keepers, tech people.  John Sides, the water truck drivers, Eddie, Jodi and their whole staff orchestrated another spectacular event.  The Joey Brown Memorial weekend was an exciting event, filled with passion, emotion and good racing.

Following racing Eddie and Jodi, the Zimmerman’s, Digger Helm and the rest of the West Coast Dirt Track Series team gathered for the awards ceremony that would end an exceptional weekend of racing, reminiscing and time shared with friends.  Plaques were presented for the top three of each of the class winner along with the envelopes for the Pros.  Comments of appreciation are always made at Willow about the girth of the envelopes presented and many comments about the whole positive and appreciative vibe of the weekend were shared.

Special thanks to the dedicated sponsors, without whom this event would not happen:  Mark and Randy Zmmerman of Specialty Fabrications, Inc., Rod Lake Racing, Terry Otton Racing, Barnett Clutches and Cables, Motion Pro, Digger Helm #57, Coventry Spares JRC Engineering, Brown’s Cycles, Maxima Racing Oils, Triumph North America, British Customs, Today’s Cycle Coverage.com, S&S Off Road Magazine and Pro Plates.

Plans are in the works for the Lake Cachuma Vintage Bike Rally June 1-4th of 2018.  Stay tuned to the West Coast Dirt Track Facebook page and website for news as it becomes available.

WOW!!! What a turnout for a spectacular weekend of racing! Road Racing champions, legends of dirt track and sprint cars and some of the biggest names in the industry came to experience the thrills of watching and racing on the primo banked 3/8 cushion of Willow Springs Walt James Stadium. Americans and foreigners alike took to the dirt and all you could see, every where you looked, were ear to ear grins. Many of those who traveled used sponsored rides to compete. Loyal fans of this event bring other like-minded folks and the atmosphere tops any grand national event! Huge pro payouts and the opportunity to share the track with the best in the world are what thrills everyone in attendance. An “Outlaw” event, without sanctions, gives all the monies to the pro racers who qualify for the big money main events and Dashes-for-cash. $55,000 total purse and the racing was evidence of the desire to win a piece of the prize money. Plus youth, amateur and vintage classes as well, all mingling together in the pits for a weekend that won’t soon be forgotten. Friends, families and competitors sharing their passion for racing and the memory of one of the sports’ pioneers who we lost last year, Joey Brown of Brown’s Cycles in Paso Robles. Just awesome!
